When should you open your pool in Wisconsin?

With the slow melt that comes with spring in Wisconsin, I think we’re all on the edge of our seats, waiting to greet nice warm weather. We’ve had just enough of a taste of warmth to think, “Enough already! Bring on summer!” But this yearning brings on one big question: When should you open your pool? Maybe you asked this question yourself. Maybe someone asked you about your plans, or maybe it was your kids excitedly begging for the first glimpse of summer splashing in their backyard paradise. Whatever the source, there’s no need to stress! The rules of opening season are pretty general – once daytime temperatures hit 70 degrees or higher, you’re good to go.

What if that seems too cold to me?

Often we think that opening our pool means we have to use it right away. That isn’t always the case. For some, 70 degrees may not be their ideal swimming weather. But here’s why you should still stick to the 70 degree rule.

  • Cleanliness – When we wait for warmer weather it gives problems a foothold. Algae likes to grow in that same warm weather. The warmer it is when you open your pool, the more likely you are to uncover your pool to find an oasis of algae growth. When you open your pool before full warmth hits, you’re more likely to be greeted with a pretty clean pool. It will be easier to maintain, and ready and waiting for you whenever the mood strikes. What’s more inviting than that?
  • Money – Opening your pool sooner means paying for it longer, right? Well… right and wrong. Sure, you’ll be paying to run it a bit longer. That being said, if you wait too long, you’re going to have to pay for extra chemicals and cleaning to get the pool to a safe and clean spot. Remember all of that algae? No, thank you!
  • Visual Appeal – Simply put, our pools show off the most with the cover off. Your backyard starts to feel like it’s already summer. You’re naturally going to want to spend more time outside, and it gives you something fun to look forward to. Welcome that feeling with open arms!

When can I expect 70 degree weather?

The US Weather Atlas predicts that in Wisconsin we’ll see 70 degree weather consistently in May to June. However, don’t be afraid to make your plans flexible! If we see that warmth sooner than expected, don’t shy away from opening your pool. Get as much out of your pool this summer as you can. You can even let The Pool People open and close your pool each season. With the best technicians in Wisconsin, you will be sure to find your pool sparkling, clear and off to a great start for the best swim season you’ve ever had. And when it’s time to close up your pool for the year, rely on The Pool People to close your pool with the best in water protection and winterization.
