What’s the Difference between Voltage in Hot Tubs?

As you’re looking for a hot tub, there are a lot of things to consider. Seats, jets, size, even shape, but one thing you may not think about is voltage. Not all hot tubs operate on the same voltage, and your needs as a hot tub owner may require a certain voltage of power. So, what’s the difference between voltage in hot tubs? Let’s break it down.

What Are the Different Voltages?

There are two common hot tub voltages: 110V and 220V. You may also hear these referred to as 120V and 240V, but don’t get confused. As a hot tub owner, you don’t need to worry about that. You can basically think of 110V and 120V, and 220V and 240V, as the same.

The voltage of the hot tub determines how much power is needed to operate the hot tub. So if you want a hot tub with a lot of features, you’ll probably need a 220V hot tub. But if you just want the absolute basics, a 110V hot tub can do the trick.

Outside of the basics, though, what’s the difference between voltage in hot tubs? Let’s dive a little deeper.

Why is a 110V Hot Tub So Basic?

Have you ever heard of a plug-n-play hot tub? The concept of this hot tub is that you can just plug it into an outlet in your home without an electrician coming to set up your hot tub. This is why a 110V hot tub is so basic.

When you bring a 110V hot tub home, you just plug it into your typical wall outlet. You know, the same outlet that powers your phone charger and your hairdryer. Sometimes you have to reset the outlet when you’re using a hairdryer. So, when it comes to hot tubs being powered by the same outlet, they can’t handle much more than the absolute basic functions of a hot tub.

Is a 220V Hot Tub Really More Fun?

A 220V hot tub can be more fun than a 110V hot tub, depending on what your idea of fun is. Your hot tub will be able to power more features, like waterfalls and stronger jets, but an electrician will have to connect your hot tub to dedicated electricity. This is because your wall outlet is not strong enough to power a 220V hot tub. But, with a little magic, an electrician can get it all set up for you.

So Which Voltage is Right for Me?

It’s hard to say which hot tub voltage is right for you. There are pros to each option, and it truly just depends on your needs as a hot tub owner.
