Hot Tubs May Improve Brain Function

There’s countless advice out there about how to keep your brain healthy and sharp. Take vitamins. Lower your stress. Don’t smoke. Keep your brain active. Now we know you can add another activity to that list—use your hot tub. No joke! Studies have shown that warm water therapy can actually boost brain function.

The Evidence

Multiple studies have shown that hydrotherapy can help. In Spain, a study of women with Fibromyalgia found that warm water therapy lessened their pain while improving their cognitive function.

At the University of Washington, Dr. Bruce Becker discovered that hydrotherapy mitigated some of the effects that aging can have on the brain. He found that warm water therapy improved symptoms for dementia patients, stroke patients, and others. Learn more about his findings in this video.

How Hot Tubs Improve Brain Function

When you soak in a spa, the benefits to your brain are two-fold. First, the warm water carries more oxygen to your brain, especially the prefrontal cortex. It stays oxygenated longer, which helps it function at a higher level.

Second, don’t forget the indirect benefits to your brain. You’re probably already familiar with many of the benefits of hot-tubbing such as lowering stress, but do you realize how stress could have an adverse effect on the brain? This is an important issue if you’re concerned with boosting your cognitive health because stress is known for impacting brain function. Here are some other hot tub benefits to note. Hot tubs:

  • Help you get better sleep
  • Decrease anxiety
  • Increase circulation throughout the body
  • Can lower blood pressure
  • Improve cardiovascular health
  • Decrease pain and help in pain management

If left untreated, all of these issues can negatively impact brain function. When you improve them by soaking in a hot tub, you help your brain as well!

Who knew that boosting brain function could be as relaxing and fun as regularly enjoying a soak in a hot tub?! No hot tub of your own?
