Everything You Need to Know About Pool Table Slates

There are a lot of options when it comes to buying a pool table, and what the table is made out of is one of the biggest considerations. If you have done your research, you know that there is a price difference between wood or MDF pool tables and slate pool tables. This price difference may make you wonder if it’s worth it to get a slate pool table. We are here to help you figure that out. Here is everything you need to know about pool table slates.

Why choose slate?

Slate is the preferred pool table material by most professionals. Why? It just works better. Slate is a heavier material, so it is less likely to warp like wood or synthetic tables. It can also be worked into a smoother surface, making for better play.

Do you have a cheap pool table already at home, or have you played on one at someone else’s home? Have you noticed a difference between playing on that table and a pool table in a place such as a pub? This is the difference between wood and slate. Casual pool players you know are more likely to have the wood table because it is more cost effective, but it comes at a cost: you don’t get the same smooth play as you do on a slate table. Plus, the table won’t last as long.

Should I get a one-piece or three-piece slate?

Whether you get a one-piece or a three-piece slate depends on how you are going to be using the pool table. If you are getting one for a commercial business like a pub or a pool hall, you may prefer a one-piece pool table slate. When you have to move pool tables around for different events, you don’t want to risk the seams between a three-piece slate to get messed up.

However, if you’re looking for a pool table for personal use or commercial use where you won’t need to move it, you may prefer a three-piece slate. These slates are easier to maneuver through narrow hallways and around corners for installation. Three-piece slates are also often thicker than one-piece slates. The additional thickness makes for an even smoother surface and even better game play.
